I was very happy with being able to raise my bathroom’s ceiling from a paltry and cave-like 7′ to 7’7″; it will definitely make the small 5 ft x 9 ft bathroom seem larger. While this was all well and good, anytime you introduce a variable into any project such as this one, whether it be something at home or work, it can lead to unintended consequences. Well, one of those unintended consequences I noticed right away was an increase in sound transmission between the two floors. I love a good challenge, so let’s tackle this one.
To reintroduce a measure of sound isolation and possibly make improvements over the original ceiling, I thought I would just do what’s popular and install a stone wool product such as Roxul Safe-N-Sound and resilient channel to tackle both the airborne noise and any impact noise.
Since the room above my project bathroom happens to be another bathroom, I won’t have to deal with music playing, a booming home theater, or much in the way of varying levels of conversation; the occasional hairdryer will probably be the loudest noise I’ll experience. So, the solutions I mentioned may work for me, but will they work for your situation? Check out this video, where I outline some alternatives so you can make an informed and wise choice.
